Einstein’s Take on Time Management

As a genius scientist, Albert Einstein questioned the traditional Newtonian theory, which considered time an absolute and constant entity. He proposed his own concept, where time was relative and could vary depending on one’s frame of reference.

As a human being…  he lost track of time too easily. He could talk for hours when engrossed in an exciting conversation, often resulting in missed appointments, delayed travels, and hilarious predicaments.

No one can say if the anecdote below is true, but one of Einstein’s famous quotes gives us every right to believe it.

“If one studies too zealously, one easily loses his pants.”

– Albert Einstein

While working on his groundbreaking theory of relativity, Einstein lost track of time and forgot about an important symposium he was supposed to attend.

In a desperate hurry, he hopped on his bicycle and rushed to the venue. Unfortunately, his notorious absent-mindedness struck again. He arrived at the event only to realize he forgot to wear pants!

Why Do We Lose Track of Time?

When engaged in a task that captures your attention or requires intense concentration, you become unaware of the passing minutes or hours. It works the same way with enjoyable or stimulating occupations (proven by Einstein) 😀

Besides that, some individuals naturally have a weaker internal sense of time. They may struggle with estimating how much time has passed or accurately judging the duration of activities.

And there are more reasons!

  • External distractions, such as notifications, social media, or interruptions, can divert our attention from how much time has passed.
  • When there are no defined goals or time boundaries for activities, staying aware of the hours you spend on them is harder.
  • The pressure or mental load shifts our focus away from many things, including time management.

While we can not go anywhere from the relativity theory, there are ways to put time spending under control and stop losing track of it. And it is not rocket science!

  • Start each day by setting clear goals and priorities, be it professional or personal ones. Understand what needs to be accomplished and allocate specific time slots for each task or activity. This will help you stay concentrated.
  • Use time management tools. Utilize tools like calendars, planners, or digital apps to organize and monitor your activities. Use reminders and alerts to keep you on track and ensure you don’t lose sight of important appointments or deadlines.

Productivity
  • Eat elephant one bite at a time. Large tasks can feel overwhelming, leading to a loss of time and focus. Break them down into smaller, more manageable chunks. Set specific time limits for each segment and take short breaks in between to refresh your mind and maintain productivity.
  • Eliminate distractions. Identify and minimize potential distractions that can derail your focus and lead to time loss. Put away your phone, close unnecessary tabs on your computer, and create a dedicated workspace that promotes productivity.
  • Train yourself to be more mindful and conscious of the passing time. Regularly check the clock or set timers to remind yourself of how much time has elapsed. Engage in activities like meditation or deep breathing exercises to improve your overall awareness and ability to stay present.
  • Allocate time to review your progress and reflect on how you’re managing your day. Assess what’s working and what’s not and make adjustments accordingly. Regular self-reflection can help you identify patterns and make necessary changes to improve your time management skills.
  • Try out the Einstein Window method. This time management technique is named after Albert Einstein. The method involves strategically scheduling focused work during your most productive hours while reserving less demanding tasks for periods when you are less mentally sharp.

Stay productive and have fun!
